African American History Washington DC

Washington DC has a interesting African American history. At one time there were so many slaves in the city many ambassadors would ask how could a country speak of freedom when there own people enslaved ? For a time there were as many free blacks in the city of Washington Dc as were slaves. Slaves would be marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to sold at auction. Pennsylvania Avenue is the same avenue the
President's parade is held every four years. If you were black you could not own a business other than being a hackney (cab), had to be in the house by 10 pm and could not vote. The slavery problem was so bad slave owners run out of space to keep the slaves so they paid jail keepers a little extra money to put the slaves in jail until they could be sold.
Freemen and slaves were responsible for help building the White House and the Capital
